National Awareness Campaign
Spreading the Word on Clinical Trials
With public awareness a critical element of its overall mission,
the Coalition of Cancer Cooperative Groups has made visibility and education
high priorities. In 2001, the Coalition began its award-winning Knowledge is
Power campaign, featuring cancer survivors and celebrity spokespeople Cokie
Roberts, Anastasia, and Lance Armstrong. The campaign dispels common
misconceptions about clinical trials while encouraging cancer patients to stay
informed regarding treatment options.
Since its inception, Knowledge is Power has generated
national attention in special sections of high-profile, mass-circulated
magazines like Newsweek and Fortune. Millions of reprints
distributed across the country reinforce the message to those with the greatest
interest.
Cancer Survivor Survey Results
A survey entitled “Cancer clinical trials awareness and
attitudes in cancer survivors,” was conducted by the Coalition of Cancer
Cooperative Groups and Northwestern University in 2005. Robert L. Comis, MD,
president and chairman of the Coalition of Cancer Cooperative Groups, and Jon
D. Miller, PhD, professor and director of the Center for Biomedical
Communications at the Feinberg School of Medicine, Northwestern University,
developed the survey and analyzed its data. The following information captures
the results from nearly 2000 US cancer survivors polled.
