Cokie Roberts, breast cancer
Information is the Key to Cancer Survival
As a journalist and news analyst for more than 25 years, Cokie Roberts depends
upon information; a reliance that remained equally important when recently
faced with a diagnosis of breast cancer.
Years earlier, Cokie lost two close friends to the disease and
began to work ardently as an advocate for breast cancer research. That
education served her well. “Advocating for others, I learned a great deal about
breast cancer. So when I was diagnosed, I wasn’t panicked. That way you can be
so much more clear-headed about your options.”
Cokie suggests that a patient’s investigative process also
encompass clinical trials. “I think the common perception is that in a clinical
trial, you could receive no treatment at all. I don’t think most people realize
that what you are really getting is the highest standard care...plus.”
Whether researching clinical trials or standard
treatments, Cokie encourages everyone to utilize the vast resources of
information accessible on the Internet: “The first thing you do as a reporter
is to learn as much as you humanly can about something; information is
everything. And it is certainly true that the more you know, the less
frightened you are.”
