Tracey Gardner, breast cancer, cancer trial
participant
“The clinical trial was about trying to find a better way for women to go
through the difficulty of chemotherapy. My life is based on helping people, and
to know I’m helping millions of women in the future made me ready to do it.”
Tracey Gardner never imagined she would find herself enrolling
in a cancer clinical trial. For 35 years she did not have a sick day in her
life, and then a knot in her breast appeared that was found to be cancerous.
Following the surgery for her cancer, Tracey knew she would
require chemotherapy, but had doubts when approached about participating in a
clinical trial. She admits, “The first thing that came to mind was am I going
to be used as a guinea pig?” Once Tracey learned more about it, however, the
choice was simple: “The clinical trial was about trying to find a better way
for women to go through the difficulty of chemotherapy. My life is based on
helping people, and to know I’m helping millions of women in the future made me
ready to do it.”
Tracey has been extremely happy with her decision
and with the quality of care she has received, and feels blessed to be able to
go about her normal activities while taking chemotherapy. With support from her
cousin and her 15-year-old daughter—whom she calls her angel, confidant, and
rock—Tracey is finding the strength she needs and says, “I try to look at the
positive side of everything. You just have to zoom in on your faith and stick
with it.”
