Anastacia, breast cancer
“Sometimes things are going to happen that you don’t expect. You can’t fit
yourself into a mold. Everyone fits a pant differently; everyone’s spirit
absorbs things differently, so how could we heal the same?”
In her words and music, international singer and songwriter
Anastacia is a strong and commanding presence. So it seemed incomprehensible
when a routine mammogram resulted in a diagnosis of breast cancer. Thankfully
Anastacia’s cancer was caught early. For her, weathering treatment meant
accepting the individuality of her experience and its side effects, and she
reminds others that everyone’s process with cancer is unique: “Sometimes things
are going to happen that you don’t expect. You can’t fit yourself into a mold.
Everyone fits a pant differently; everyone’s spirit absorbs things differently,
so how could we heal the same?”
Ultimately, Anastacia faced cancer with her
indomitable spirit, and tells others, “My advice about the best way to handle
something is to look at it positively. I looked at cancer as a blessing because
it taught me more about myself. It also allowed me to raise awareness that
cancer is survivable.”
Anastacia feels fortunate to have the opportunity
to educate women on what she has learned: “Women think breast cancer is after
40 and hereditary; but that’s not the truth.” She encourages all women to
consider getting screened, regardless of their age or family history. To help
raise funds and further research on breast cancer in young women, Anastacia
established The Anastacia Fund in conjunction with The Breast Cancer Research
Foundation. For more information, visit
