Kris Portera, colon cancer, cancer trial
participant
“I think whatever they can learn from me; have at it. There is nothing worse
than thinking that your kids may have to do this. I hope whatever I do today
will change it for their future.”
Seven years ago, Kris Portera overcame her colon cancer with surgery. When the
cancer returned this past year, however, the mother of two young boys didn’t
give it a second thought when her doctor proposed a clinical trial comparing
the effectiveness of two drug combinations. Kris felt like the trial offered
the best option, regardless of whether she was assigned to the new drug regimen
or not: “They tell you that this may not work for you, but they also make it
very clear that you are getting the gold standard treatment you would normally
get even if you weren’t in the trial.”
Kris gives credit to her vast and enthusiastic
support system for helping her weather the chemotherapy. Kris also feels very
positively about the care she is receiving as part of a trial study and reports
that she is watched “like an absolute hawk.”
While Kris waits to find out just how well the
treatment is working, she takes comfort in knowing her trial participation is
helping to move cancer research forward: “I think whatever they can learn from
me; have at it. There is nothing worse than thinking that your kids may have to
do this. I hope whatever I do today will change it for their future.”
